Daniel Morowitz’s New Mythologies curated by Lauren Powell

July 24 - August 12, 2021

Lauren Powell is pleased to present New Mythologies, a celebration of Queer culture by the dazzling Daniel Morowitz - on view August 13 - September 4, 2021. Daniel creates narrative figures elevating queer identity and centralizing queer people, and the resulting scenes rely strongly on a language he has created full of objects, gestures, positioning, and even colors in reference to the this shared experience. His symbols and mythological elements maintain the historically hidden doublespeak of queer culture while creating a new code all his own, no longer veiled, revealed in image. The vibrant, dynamic scenes reveal something once thought of as monstrous as something desirable, weighing equally on the tension between sexuality, violence, and playfulness. While there has been progress in openness and representation, Queer culture often manufactures sex and sexuality as equally deplorable and as the ultimate out of reach experience. Daniel wrestles with these conflicting feelings creating a fictional universe to contain and describe them.
