Still Lifes [WAVLT]*

*With A Very Long Title

Thrilled to present this epilogue to Moved Still Lives (which closed yesterday in Los Angeles, CA) - a series of 11 new works on paper, one which was featured in the physical show and has a brilliant, multifaceted custom built frame housing several of the actual works found within.

The peripatetic Pennock, although consistently returning to his New York City base, has been exhibiting, residing, and working on projects for luxury brands for extended periods all over the world for the last thirty years.

A multidisciplinarian who classifies all his work under the rubric “views from a contrarian’s quest for betterment”, the shifting formats and returns to ongoing series of works are often determined by the constraints or circumstantial opportunities of wherever he is living at the time and the practicalities of whatever functions as his studio. Grounded in Maine since before the pandemic, a less nomadic Pennock has recently adjusted one ongoing series depicting his own work in a variety of interiors and locations to a more domestic setting - the Still Life.

Populated by a cast of objects and paintings that not only refer to his own previous artwork, but also to the various design gigs he’s taken over the years to finance his lamely unprofitable art career. That said, he has collectors on six continents (major discount for residents of Antarctica) including The Communist Party Headquarters of Israel, the Baltimore museum of art, Michael Cunningham, and Woody freaking Johnson.

The new Still Lifes, all titled Still Life [WAVLT] (Still Life With A Very Long Title), each have what is essentially another drawing on the backside revealing the titles in a manner that is part product description on a World of Interiors magazine spread and part resume of questionable legitimacy.

Each still life functions as a short story loaded with his typical self deprecation/deprivation and references to art history, writing, and architecture - a treasure chest one has to unpack one element at a time. Please take your time, and use the maps on the back to guide your path.
