Quarantined Still Lifes

Like most artists, Griffin Goodman had to think differently when quarantine started, moving away from his signature tondo paintings over to paper. He’s transported his nostalgic, often appropriated, icons and memories from childhood onto a new surface. These works completely retain the nod to digital narcissism and the way we construct ourselves through the objects we acquire, hold onto, and take our selfies with. Glimpses of familiarity will draw you in, and then the treasure hunt begins. The white lines on a black, chalkboard-like surface immediately makes me feel like I’m here to LEARN something. Griffin’s work, sourced from both popular culture and art history alike, bridges the gap from adolescence to young adulthood - where innocence is lost - and I think we can all find a part of ourselves in each scene.

Griffin Goodman (American, b. 1995) lives and works in Chicago, IL. He received his MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2019 and a BFA from Ringling College of Art and Design in 2017. He has had recent group exhibitions at Andrew Rafazc Gallery (Chicago, IL), the Sarasota Art Center (Sarasota, FL), Jaw Gallery (Yamaguchi, Japan), and the Elmhurst Art Museum (Chicago, IL).
